Sanjay Dutt

Actor • Film Producer

Few careers in Indian cinema have stretched as long, or taken as many turns, as Sanjay Dutt‘s. He debuted as a romantic hero in 1981, became one of Bollywood’s biggest action stars in the early 1990s, and redefined himself as the lovable Munna Bhai in the 2000s.

More than four decades later, he is still working steadily. In recent years he has become one of Indian cinema’s most in-demand screen villains, with major roles in KGF: Chapter 2, Leo and the record-breaking Dhurandhar films.

Fans have long called him “Sanju Baba.” He has acted in more than 135 films, won two Filmfare Awards, and had his life turned into one of the highest-grossing Hindi biopics, Sanju (2018).

Early Life and Family

Sanjay Dutt was born on 29 July 1959 in Bombay into one of Hindi cinema’s best-known film families. His father, Sunil Dutt, was a leading actor and filmmaker who later became a Union Minister. His mother, Nargis, is remembered as one of the greatest actresses of her era, especially for Mother India (1957).

He has two younger sisters. Priya Dutt is a politician and former Member of Parliament from Mumbai. Namrata Dutt is married to actor Kumar Gaurav.

He was sent to The Lawrence School, Sanawar, a well-known boarding school in Himachal Pradesh, and later attended Elphinstone College in Mumbai.

The Road to Films

His first time on screen came long before his official debut. As a child, he appeared briefly as a young qawwali singer in his father’s film Reshma Aur Shera (1971).

His proper launch came a decade later with Rocky (1981), directed by Sunil Dutt. The film is also remembered for a painful reason: Nargis died of cancer in May 1981, just days before it reached theatres.

Sanjay Dutt Career Journey

The 1980s: Finding His Footing

Rocky did well at the box office, and Vidhaata (1982) became one of that year’s biggest Hindi hits. For much of the early 1980s, though, his career was uneven.

The turning point was Mahesh Bhatt’s Naam (1986). His performance as a young man pulled into the underworld was widely praised and gave him a new footing. Kabzaa (1988) and Hathyar (1989) followed, shaping the rugged screen image he became known for.

The Early 1990s: A Top Box-Office Star

The early 1990s were Sanjay Dutt’s commercial peak. Saajan (1991) was the highest-grossing Hindi film of its year, and Sadak (1991) was another major success. He earned a Filmfare Best Actor nomination for Saajan.

Then came Subhash Ghai’s Khalnayak (1993). His role as the outlaw Ballu became one of the defining anti-heroes of Hindi cinema, and the film was among 1993’s biggest hits. Box Office India placed him on its “Top Actors” list from 1991 to 1993, and he topped it in 1992 and 1993.

Legal Setbacks and a Late-1990s Revival

In 1993, Dutt was arrested in connection with the illegal possession of weapons linked to the Mumbai serial blasts case. The legal case would shape his life for more than two decades (covered in the Personal Life section).

His film career recovered in the late 1990s with Daag: The Fire, Haseena Maan Jaayegi and above all Vaastav: The Reality (1999). Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, Vaastav starred him as Raghu, an ordinary man drawn into Mumbai’s gang world. The role won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

The 2000s: Munna Bhai and a New Image

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir (2000), in which he played a police officer, earned strong reviews and another Filmfare nomination.

The biggest change came with Rajkumar Hirani’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003). As Murli Prasad Sharma, a big-hearted Mumbai tough guy who fakes his way into medical college, Dutt showed a warmth and comic timing audiences had rarely seen from him. The film ran for 25 weeks in theatres, won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian.

The sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), was an even bigger phenomenon. It helped bring the idea of “Gandhigiri” into popular conversation and earned him another Best Actor nomination.

Other notable films from this decade include Kaante (2002), Parineeta (2005), Dus (2005), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and the comedy hit Dhamaal (2007).

The 2010s: Villains, Comebacks and a Biopic

In 2012, Dutt took on one of his most memorable negative roles as the menacing Kancha Cheena in Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath. He also appeared in Son of Sardaar (2012) and played Bhairon Singh in Hirani’s PK (2014).

After serving his sentence, he was released in February 2016 and returned to films with Bhoomi (2017). In 2018, Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju, with Ranbir Kapoor playing him, became one of that year’s biggest hits and brought his life story to a new generation.

2020s: A Pan-India Second Innings

The 2020s have been one of the busiest stretches of his career. Starting with KGF: Chapter 2 (2022), where he played the warlord Adheera, Dutt made his Kannada debut and became a sought-after villain across Indian film industries.

He made his Tamil debut as Antony Das in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo (2023), made a special appearance in Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (2023), and entered Telugu cinema with Double iSmart (2024).

His biggest recent success is Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar (December 2025), in which he plays SP Chaudhary Aslam of the Sindh Police’s Lyari Task Force. The film became the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025. Its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge (March 2026), did even better and has been reported as the second-highest-grossing Indian film of all time.

In 2026 he also played Afzal Khan in Riteish Deshmukh’s historical epic Raja Shivaji, which became the highest-grossing Marathi film ever. Not every recent release has worked, however: The Raja Saab and KD: The Devil received weak responses.

Munna Bhai is one of the most loved characters in Hindi film. The role showed that an actor known for tough-guy parts could lead a warm, socially conscious comedy.

His recent work in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi films also makes him one of the few Bollywood stars of his generation with a real pan-India presence late in his career.
