Srinivasan, was a criminal lawyer who had taken part in the freedom struggle, and his mother was Rajalakshmi. He is the youngest of four children. His brothers Charuhasan and Chandrahasan also worked in films, and his sister Nalini Raghu is a classical dancer. Actor-director Suhasini Maniratnam is his niece.

His father later renamed him “Kamal Haasan”. He studied in Paramakudi and then in Chennai, at Santhome school and Hindu Higher Secondary School, Triplicane, and trained in classical dance as a teenager.

Kamal Haasan Career Journey

Child Actor (1960–1963)

Kamal made his debut at six in A. Bhimsingh’s Kalathur Kannamma (1960), opposite Gemini Ganesan and Savitri. His performance won the President’s Gold Medal, the national award for best child artist. He acted in a few more films as a child before leaving cinema to study.

Dance Assistant to Leading Man (1970–1977)

He returned as a teenager, working as an assistant dance choreographer and in small roles. K. Balachander’s Arangetram (1973) gave him his first notable adult role, and Balachander became his mentor. His first lead role came in the Malayalam film Kanyakumari (1974), which won him his first Filmfare Award. He acted in Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal (1975), Rajinikanth’s debut film, and in Moondru Mudichu and Avargal, often alongside Rajinikanth.

Stardom Across Languages (1977–1986)

Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile (1977) and Sigappu Rojakkal (1978) made him a major star in Tamil. He also became popular in Malayalam and Telugu, with films such as Maro Charitra (1978), and made his Hindi lead debut in its remake Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981). Balu Mahendra’s Moondram Pirai (1982), about a young man caring for a woman with amnesia, won him his first National Award for Best Actor. The Telugu films Sagara Sangamam (1983) and Swathi Muthyam (1986) further widened his range.

Nayakan and a Landmark Run (1987–1996)

Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan (1987), in which he played a Mumbai gangster over several decades of his life, won him his second National Award for Best Actor. It was India’s submission for the Academy Awards and appears on Time magazine’s list of the all-time 100 best films.

He followed it with the silent film Pushpaka Vimana (1987), the triple-role comedy Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), in which he played a dwarf, Gunaa (1991), and Thevar Magan (1992), which he wrote and produced. Shankar’s Indian (1996), in which he played an elderly freedom fighter and his son, brought him his third National Award for Best Actor.

Writer-Director (1997–2010)

He made his official debut as director with Hey Ram (2000), a drama set around the Partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. He also wrote and directed Virumaandi (2004). Through the 2000s he balanced comedies such as Panchatanthiram and Vasool Raja MBBS with films such as Anbe Sivam (2003) and Dasavathaaram (2008), in which he played ten roles.

Vishwaroopam to Vikram (2013–2022)

Vishwaroopam (2013), a spy thriller he wrote and directed, faced a temporary ban in Tamil Nadu before release and went on to be a hit. After Papanasam (2015) and Vishwaroopam II (2018), he took a break from films for politics. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram (2022), which he also produced, became one of the biggest hits of his career.

Recent Films (2024–2026)

In 2024 he played the villain Supreme Yaskin in Kalki 2898 AD and returned in Shankar’s Indian 2, which received poor reviews. In 2025 he reunited with Mani Ratnam for Thug Life, 38 years after Nayakan, but the film underperformed. In 2026 he began shooting Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2.
