Foreign Investors Pull ₹13,138 Crore From Indian Stocks as Market Confidence Weakens

Foreign portfolio investors have once again turned sellers in Indian equities, pulling ₹13,138 crore from the Indian stock market during the first half of September, adding to concerns about foreign investor sentiment toward Indian shares.

The latest selling comes after a difficult period for the domestic market. Foreign investors have reportedly withdrawn around ₹2.37 lakh crore from Indian equities so far in 2026, highlighting the scale of the pressure facing Indian stocks.

Why Are Foreign Investors Selling?

Several global factors are influencing investor decisions.

Crude oil prices, US bond yields and a stronger US dollar have all contributed to a more cautious environment for emerging-market investments. When global yields rise and the dollar strengthens, investors can become more selective about allocating money to markets such as India.

Higher crude prices are another concern for India because the country relies heavily on imported oil. A sustained increase in energy costs can put pressure on inflation, corporate margins and the country’s external finances.

Indian Market Faces a Difficult Phase

The latest FPI selling comes as Indian benchmark indices have recorded a prolonged period of weakness. The Nifty 50 has suffered five consecutive weekly declines, leaving investors closely watching the next market session for signs of stabilisation.

The market’s direction is likely to depend not only on domestic economic indicators but also on developments in global crude prices, bond yields and expectations surrounding US monetary policy.

What It Means for Indian Investors

Large-scale foreign selling does not automatically mean that Indian stocks are heading toward a prolonged crash. Domestic institutional investors and retail participation can provide support, while individual companies may continue to perform differently depending on their earnings and business outlook.

However, sustained FPI withdrawals can influence market liquidity and sentiment, particularly when global investors reduce exposure to emerging markets at the same time.

For Indian investors, the latest numbers underline the importance of watching global developments alongside domestic economic and corporate factors.

With markets already facing pressure, the coming weeks could be important in determining whether foreign investors begin returning to Indian equities or continue reducing their exposure.
