TikTok Founder Zhang Yiming Surpasses Gautam Adani to Become Asia’s Richest Person
ByteDance co-founder Zhang Yiming has surpassed Indian tycoon Gautam Adani on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with an estimated fortune exceeding $105 billion, highlighting the shift toward AI and digital wealth over traditional industry across Asia.
In a landmark shift across the regional wealth landscape, ByteDance co-founder Zhang Yiming has officially overtaken Indian industrial tycoon Gautam Adani to claim the top spot as Asia’s wealthiest individual, according to the latest figures from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Zhang’s estimated net worth surged past $105 billion, edging out Adani following a sharp upward revision in the valuation of ByteDance, the Beijing-headquartered technology giant behind global short-video powerhouse TikTok and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin.
The transition highlights a growing dynamic across global wealth rankings: asset growth tied to artificial intelligence, software algorithms, and digital platforms is rapidly outpacing traditional fortunes anchored in manufacturing, ports, and energy infrastructure.
From $13 Billion to Over $105 Billion: The AI Catalyst
Bloomberg first initiated tracking on Zhang’s fortune in March 2019 at an estimated $13 billion. Since then, the 43-year-old entrepreneur’s net worth has expanded more than eightfold.
The immediate trigger for the latest ranking shift was a $12 billion single-month leap in Zhang’s estimated net worth. This revaluation followed updated internal marks from global institutional asset managers—including BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, and T. Rowe Price—which raised the valuation multiples applied to ByteDance’s privately held shares.
While TikTok remains a primary revenue engine, investor interest has increasingly zeroed in on ByteDance’s generative AI ecosystem:
- Doubao AI: ByteDance’s flagship consumer AI chatbot, which has become one of China’s most widely adopted conversational assistants.
- Seedance: The company’s newly advanced video-generation technology, leveraging ByteDance’s core algorithmic strengths in content delivery.
- Algorithmic Edge: ByteDance’s ability to train custom multimodal models utilizing its massive data streams across global video networks.
Although Zhang formally stepped down as ByteDance CEO in 2021 to prioritize long-term strategy, he continues to hold significant voting control within the enterprise.
Market Headwinds Impact Adani’s Ranking
Gautam Adani, who led the Asian rankings earlier this year with a net worth reaching roughly $120 billion in June, slipped to the second position after his net worth adjusted to approximately $104.8 billion.
The contraction follows recent equity pullbacks across Adani Group-linked stocks, driven by wider shifts in MSCI emerging market weightings, volatility in global crude benchmarks, and persistent pressure from elevated bond yields.
The updated Bloomberg Billionaires Index places the top tier of Asian wealth as follows:
- Zhang Yiming (ByteDance, China)
- Gautam Adani (Adani Group, India)
- Mukesh Ambani (Reliance Industries, India)
- Tadashi Yanai (Fast Retailing/Uniqlo, Japan)
- Masayoshi Son (SoftBank Group, Japan)
The Private Market Caveat
Financial analysts emphasize that the thin margin between Zhang and Adani remains subject to market volatility. Unlike the publicly traded entities comprising Adani’s enterprise value, ByteDance remains closely held.
To account for liquidity and regulatory uncertainties, Bloomberg applies a standard 10% discount to ByteDance’s internal valuation estimates. As secondary markets adjust and public market equities fluctuate, the rankings at the summit of Asian wealth are poised to remain in dynamic contention throughout the quarters ahead.
