He lost both parents early. His father died in 1981, when Shah Rukh was 15, and his mother died in 1991, the year before his film debut. He has often spoken about how their deaths shaped his drive to succeed.

Education and Theatre

He studied at St. Columba’s School in Delhi, where he was active in sports and school drama, and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. He later enrolled in a mass communication course at Jamia Millia Islamia but left to pursue acting. He trained in theatre under director Barry John at the Theatre Action Group in Delhi.

Shah Rukh Khan Career Journey

Television Beginnings (1988–1991)

Khan started on television with the army drama Fauji (1989), playing Abhimanyu Rai, and followed it with Circus (1989–90), directed by Aziz Mirza. The shows made him a familiar face across India before he moved to Mumbai in 1991.

Film Debut and the Anti-Hero Phase (1992–1994)

His first release, Deewana (1992), was a hit and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He then took risks few leading men would, playing obsessive or murderous characters in Baazigar (1993), Darr (1993) and Anjaam (1994). Baazigar won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

The King of Romance (1995–2004)

Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) changed his career. Its run at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre continued for decades, making it one of the longest-running films in Indian cinema. Hits such as Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer-Zaara followed.

He also took on dramatic parts, including Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002) and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades (2004), in which he played a NASA scientist who returns to rural India.

Range and Global Reach (2006–2014)

Don (2006), Chak De! India (2007) and Om Shanti Om (2007) showed his range, from action to sports drama to comedy. His role as a hockey coach in Chak De! India is often counted among his best work. My Name Is Khan (2010) was a major overseas success, and Chennai Express (2013) and Happy New Year (2014) were big commercial hits.

Setback and Break (2015–2022)

Films such as Fan (2016), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) and Zero (2018) did not meet expectations. After Zero, he took a long break from lead roles, appearing only in cameos, including Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Brahmāstra in 2022.

The 2023 Comeback: Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki

Siddharth Anand’s spy film Pathaan (January 2023) and Atlee’s Jawan (September 2023) both crossed ₹1,000 crore worldwide. He closed the year with Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki, a drama about illegal immigration. Jawan won him the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 71st National Film Awards, announced in August 2025, which he shared with Vikrant Massey.

Recent Work (2024–2026)

In 2025 he made a cameo in his son Aryan Khan’s Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood. He has spent 2025 and 2026 filming King, which also stars his daughter Suhana Khan.
