Firozabad Pregnant Woman Dies After Alleged Police Assault, 6 Police Personnel Suspended

A 28-year-old pregnant woman died in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, after her family alleged that she was assaulted by police personnel who had arrived at her home to take her husband into custody in connection with a theft case.

The woman, identified as Anjali Verma, reportedly went into labour after the incident and gave birth to a baby boy. Her condition later deteriorated and she died while undergoing treatment. The newborn remains in critical condition and was referred to Agra for further medical care, according to reports.

Family Alleges Police Assault

According to the family, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Dharmpal Singh arrived at the couple’s home in Labhaua village in the Shikohabad area late on Sunday night to take Anjali’s husband, Gaurav Kumar, into custody in connection with a theft case.

The family alleged that Anjali, who was heavily pregnant, pleaded with the officers not to take her husband. They claimed that she was kicked or shoved during the confrontation, causing her to fall.

Gaurav was subsequently taken away by the police, while Anjali’s health reportedly deteriorated.

She was taken to a government hospital in Shikohabad, where she delivered a baby boy on Monday morning. Her condition worsened after childbirth, and she was later shifted to a private hospital in Firozabad, where doctors declared her dead.

Six Police Personnel Suspended

Following Anjali’s death, six police personnel were suspended for negligence.

Those suspended include Sub-Inspectors Dharmpal Singh and Satyapal Singh, Head Constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar, and Constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar.

Firozabad police said an inquiry has been initiated and further action will depend on its findings.

The incident also triggered protests, with villagers gathering at the police station and demanding action against those allegedly responsible.

Police Deny Assault Allegation

Police have disputed the family’s account of physical assault.

According to a police statement reported by multiple outlets, Anjali and her family members were not assaulted during the police action. Police also said that no external injury was found during the post-mortem examination.

The police have maintained that Gaurav was brought to the station for questioning and was later handed over to his family. An impartial investigation has been ordered to establish what happened and whether there was any negligence or misconduct.

Newborn Remains Critical

The death has left Anjali’s newborn son in critical condition. The baby was initially treated in Firozabad before being referred to a hospital in Agra, according to the family.

The case has attracted public attention and demands for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Anjali’s death.

The inquiry will now be crucial in determining what happened during the police visit and whether the allegations made by the family are supported by evidence.
